Understanding Inward Processing (TPA) with Lantimar Yachting
When it comes to yacht refitting and maintenance, understanding the intricacies of Inward Processing, or Tráfico de Perfeccionamiento Activo (TPA), can make a significant difference in operational efficiency and cost savings. Lantimar Yachting, a division of the Lantimar Group, offers an optimum TPA services across Spain, leveraging their extensive experience and comprehensive logistics capabilities.
What is Inward Processing (TPA)?
Inward Processing, commonly referred to as TPA, is a customs regime that allows non-EU flagged yachts with non-EU owners and under to perform repairs and maintenance within the EU without incurring the 21% VAT typically associated with such services. This exemption applies to both the services performed and any EU sourced goods or spare parts incorporated into the yacht during the refit process.
How Does TPA Work?
The TPA regime can be initiated only once the yacht is moored in the designated refit marina/shipyard and after the necessary authorization from Customs is obtained via the DUA opening form. It is crucial that no work commences, and no part removed from the yacht until this authorization is granted. Once approved, the TPA typically lasts for a period of 6 months, with the possibility of extending up to 18 months with prior notification to Customs.

Misinformation
There is a common myth that the Active Perfection Regime (TPA) can only be used when a ship is in a shipyard. However, this is not correct. Ships undergoing refits and repairs can also take advantage of this regime while in a marina. Additionally, another misconception is that ships can only remain under the TPA regime in a single location. In reality, the TPA allows a ship to move between different locations, meaning the refit process can begin in a marina, then continue in a shipyard, or vice versa, offering flexibility in where and how the work is carried out.
