The implementation of the European Union’s new Entry/Exit System (EES) introduces a significant change in border control procedures for third-country nationals entering or leaving the Schengen Area. Our goal is to ensure that our clients are fully informed about these new regulations.
As of 18 November, the Border Control Point at the Port of Palma has activated the EES system. Below you will find the essential information to help ensure that your crew’s immigration procedures run as smoothly as possible during this transition period.
What Is the EES and How Does It Affect Crew Members?
The EES is a digital platform that records information on non-Schengen crew members as they enter or exit the area, replacing manual passport stamping with a digital registration.
Key Operational Requirement:
Anyone crossing the border MUST PRESENT THEMSELVES IN PERSON.
Both biometric data (facial image and fingerprints) and biographical data will be recorded.
Transition Phase and Key Points
Implementation in Spain is gradual, with a six-month transition period.
During this time:
Coexistence of Systems: The EES will coexist with the traditional passport-stamping method, which may lead to longer border checks and potential delays.
Letters of Guarantee: Crew members should be prepared, as authorities may request Letters of Guarantee to meet immigration and port requirements.
EES Implementation Status in Spain Progressive installation is underway in other Spanish ports, where the system is expected to be fully implemented by Summer 2026. In Catalonia, Malaga and Canary Islands the border offices are expected to activate the system by December 2025. Further updates will be provided on this page.
Specific Clarifications from the Port of Palma Border Control Point
For Crew Entry/Exit Declarations, physical presence is required ONLY for:
(… Points 1 and 2 for crew remain unchanged …)
Yacht Clearance
Normally as a result of the Schengen Agreement, when a non-EU flagged vessel enters or leaves European ports to or from a non-European country, the captain and all crew members must go ashore and clear Immigration (Frontier Police) at a designated port of entry. A special entry or exit form must be completed to register the yacht’s movement when arriving from or departing to a non-Schengen country.
WHAT CHANGES NOW? With the implementation of the EES system this procedure will no longer be executed in Palma de Mallorca Border Control.
